New Toy – Red Epic Dragon
So it’s official, I’ve traded in my old workhorse Red Scarlet-X for a brand spanky new Red Epic Dragon. Its fully loaded, its fancy, its shiny and I brought it just in time for red to announce their new camera (of course).
Never mind, it was fairly predictable Red would do that; and to be fair as the Weapon runs the same sensor as the Dragon, its not something I’m overly heartbroken with or in any great rush to upgrade (just yet).
The Dragon Epic is what it is; and that is of course an outstanding piece of kit and a major upgrade from my X series scarlet.
I seriously weighed up the competition before dropping the cash and to be fair in my price point it was the only camera I actually liked the ‘look’ it produced.
Predictable and versatile the dragon sensor has solves one of the major problems Red has had in the past, that being skin tone reproduction
“While its not hard to make beautiful women look good, the dragons skin tone rendering is absolutely stunning’.
With over 16.5 stops of dynamic range and using the new mini mags it means I can (when needed) run at extremely low compression ratios on the raw files. Lower the compression the cleaner the image the better the final picture.
100fps at 6k (300 at 2k) a gorgeously large sensor with excellent colour reproduction (finally red). The epic has been for me a great buy, its currently suiting my style of shooting and has allowed me extra versatility in my craft.
